Shevanthi’s talk on her NGO ‘Room to Read’ is eloquent and their work is impressive. Having been a bean counter for all my life focusing on shareholder value this talk gave me a different perspective on social capital. Being an avid reader myself I can appreciate the good and great work Shevanthi is doing at grassroots level to improve the reading in under privileged areas.
Shevanthi’s talk is thought provoking and made us to think outside the box. I am impressed the way Room to Read carries the whole stakeholders i.e. parents, teachers, children and communities with them in achieving their goal of improve reading. I intend to take up her offer to see her NGO’s great work soon, as the saying goes “seeing is believing” and encouraging my acquaintances in the corporate world to participate in this great work.

A presentation with passion and purpose. An engaging 45 minutes at the TMC’s evening meeting. What seems unique about Room to Read is that it is ingrained in the national fabric and has buy in off all key stakeholders, the Government teachers and students in addition to its crucial role in character building at an early stage in life..
The evolution of CSR into unobtrusive but purpose driven organisational cultures which also drive high employee engagement needs to be understood by C-Suite Executives.
Cheers …

Room to Read – a discourse by Shevanthi Jayasuriya, Country Director
I was so pleased I attended the TMC Members Speak session last evening to listen to our Founder Member Shevanthi, speak so passionately on what Room to Read intends to accomplish in Sri Lanka.
The focus on literacy and education as a foundation to a life of fulfilment for our people and the grassroot engagement with marginalised sections of our society was indeed most heartwarming. I was particularly challenged by Shevanthi’s impassioned plea to ‘go and see to believe!’
It is coincidental that the Mclarens Group with whom I am associated, is the first and only Sri Lankan corporate to partner the local Room to Read mission so far. So, I will go and see myself!
