Sri Lanka backs Uganda’s candidate for UN top post

Sri Lanka has confirmed that it will fully support Uganda’s candidate Sam Kutesa for the Presidency of the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has assured Sri Lanka’s support for Uganda’s candidate when Uganda’s Minister of State for International Affairs Okello Oryem called on the President at Temple Trees earlier this week.
Okello said Sri Lanka confirmed its full support for Kutesa, who is currently Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Minister, for the UN top job.
Kutesa’s election to preside the UN General Assembly from 11 June has come under severe criticism for his anti-gay stance and being a part of a cabinet that passed a brutal and widely denounced anti-gay law.
He has been elected uncontested for the 12-month post as this year it is Africa’s turn to hold the post and the African Union has unanimously approved Kutesa’s candidature.
