President instructs speedy rescue and relief action for landslide victimsPresident Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday instructed relevant officials to take speedy action to rescue the people trapped in sudden landslides in the central hill country. He also urged the officials to provide relief assistance to the affected people. A row of line houses in Meeriyabedda, Haldummulla in Badulla District have been destroyed by a landslide which occurred yesterday. Rescue operations were being carried out by the Police, Army and the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) with the help of the people. A Bell 212 rescue helicopter has been deployed in the rescue operations, the Air Force said. It is estimated about 120 line houses have been destroyed and members of more than 150 families totalling about 500 who were living in that area are believed to be trapped. The landslide affected areas are Haldummulla, Kotabathma and Meeriubedda in Badulla district. Police and Army personnel and volunteers have been deployed for rescue and relief work. |
