President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been conferred an honorary doctorate by the Surindri Rajabhat University of Thailand in honour of the services he rendered to uplift Buddhism in Sri Lanka and abroad.
The Surindri Rajabhat University functions under the administration of the King of Thailand.
The University has appreciated the yeomen services rendered by the President to safeguard Buddhism and measures taken for the protection of Buddhism. This is the first occasion such a doctorate had been conferred to a head of state.
The doctorate was conferred to President Rajapaksa at a function held at the Sandahiru Seya premises in Anuradhapura by a special representative of Surindri Rajabhat University to coincide with the Sacred Relics depositing ceremony in the Sandahiru Seya on 23 November.
