Fulfilling a pledge given in the 100-day plan, the Government yesterday commenced a program to provide free Wi-Fi access to all the people in the country.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Mangala Samaraweera and Chairperson of Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) Chitranganie Mubarak, launched the program, opening the first free Wi-Fi facility at the Colombo Fort Railway Station.
In the first phase, free Wi-Fi will be available at 26 locations covering eight districts. Kandy, Colombo Fort, Polonnaruwa, Matara, Jaffna, Galle, Peradeniya, Katunayake, Ratnapura and Dehiwala are among the first cities to get the free service which was promised by the present Government before the presidential elections.
Initially the service will be available at a rate of 512 Kb/Sec with a total bandwidth of 100 megabytes. The service will be expanded to 1000 locations across the country.
The 26 public locations are the Fort Railway Station, the Pettah public and private bus stands, the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, the Floating Market in Pettah, the Colombo Law College, the Colombo Public Library, the Dehiwala Zoo, the Colombo Racecourse, the Colombo Police headquarters, the Galle Railway Station, the Jaffna Railway Station, the Fort Dutch Hospital, the Galle Face Colombo, the Battaramulla Foreign Employment Bureau, the Colombo Museum, the Karapitiya Hospital, the Ratnapura Museum, the Polonnaruwa Base Hospital, the Matara bus stand, the Polonnaruwa Railway Station, the Matara Railway Station, the Mirijjawila Botanical Garden, the Jaffna Public Library, the Kandy Railway Station and the Peradeniya Railway Station.
