The ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) yesterday deposited the bond for its candidate in the 8 January 2015 presidential poll - incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
General Secretary of the UPFA Minister Susil Premajayanth deposited the bond for President Rajapaksa at the Elections Secretariat in Rajagiriya.
Minister Premajayantha was accompanied by SLFP National Organiser and Rajapaksa campaign manager Basil Rajapaksa, SLFP General Secretary Anura Priyadharshana Yapa and Minister Dinesh Gunewardane.
Gunewardane said 14 political parties had come together to ensure the victory of President Rajapaksa at the January poll.
“We have already started the campaign,” the UPFA General Secretary told reporters outside the Secretariat.
Beset by defections from within the ruling alliance, which has lost 11 members of parliament since the elections were declared on 20 November, Minister Yapa insisted all constituent members of the UPFA would support the President’s re-election bid. (DB)
