President Mahinda Rajapaksa added some Bollywood glamour to his polls campaign yesterday, attending a free medical clinic in Borella with stars Salman Khan and Jacqueline Fernandez. The widely publicised star-studded event was organised by Hambantota District MP Namal Rajapaksa’s Nil Balakaya movement. On his official Twitter account, Namal Rajapaksa thanked Khan and the Salman Khan Foundation for donating 200 lenses for cataract operations in Sri Lanka. Amid speculation and Opposition outrage that President Rajapaksa was campaigning with Bollywood stars, the Government Information Department said the star-duo were in Colombo to attend the medical clinic. Sri Lankan actor and UNP MP Ranjan Ramanayake appealed to Khan not to sell his popularity to “cheap, corrupted politicians”. “You don’t know anything about Sri Lankan politics, so don’t do this. Because all Sri Lankans love you,” Ramanayake said in a video uploaded with a message to Salman Khan.
