‘Design’ is now known to have the ability to add value, enhance or even completely reinvent a business: This is why industries in Sri Lanka and the rest of the world offer high-paid, stable careers for designers. Shedding light on this growing career sector, AOD- Sri Lanka’s leading design educator is hosting Design Sense - a freely accessible open house. The event is designed to create a better understanding of how the business world works with designers today, and how this leads to the availability of many design careers that are lucrative and prestigious as they are fulfilling. With free career counselling, exhibitions, interactive creative activities and taster sessions for design jobs, AOD extends an open invitation to aspiring young designers, after A/Ls students and their parents to walk in free to Design Sense 2016. The event which is the final one of its kind for the year will be held between 9 am – 5 pm on Saturday 3rd September, and is a must-attend for any After A/L student and their parents.

Major industries like hospitality and tourism rely on interior designers and product design for spaces, furniture, cutlery, crockery etc. that expresses their own identity through clever design. Most large-scale exports like tea and cinnamon, whose clienteles appreciate good design, look to graphic designers for strong logos, brand identities and packaging. Similarly, businesses turn to fashion designers for corporate uniforms that are in line with their brand image while Sri Lanka’s massive apparel industry is also powered by fashion designers who come up with new product innovations. These are just a few examples from the many industries that consult or employ full time designers for better business. Therefore, ‘design’ is now among the most in-demand career paths offered by the biggest local industries.

To shed light on the various types of design careers presented by the local industries and the opportunities in them, AOD is hosting ‘Design Sense’. The event includes a free line-up of exhibitions, video screenings, talks and workshops. The events are designed not only to provide information, but also to give a first-hand experience of studying and working as a designer.
