The Shilpa Kala handicrafts sales exhibition organised by the Indian High Commission in collaboration with Hands of Sri Lanka – National Crafts Foundation and Daskari Haat Samithi will be held at Nugasevana at the BMICH Colombo from 25-28 May.
India has always been a loyal friend and neighbor of Sri Lanka from ancient times and this continues to remain the case even now. As two nations of the South Asian continent sharing similar cultural diversity and traditions, the bond between Sri Lanka and India has been a vital factor. Buddhism was the most priceless gift which we received from India and we have also been influenced by its music, arts and cinema in modern times. The colonial era offered its similar share of cultural benefits but it is from India that we have received and exchanged many cultural gifts.
The arts and crafts industry in Sri Lanka too has its Indian influences. Known for its colorful and attractive display of crafts and artwork from every province, India takes great pride in showcasing the skills and talents of its artisans who have mastered their work over generations, maintaining their traditions.
The handicrafts industry in Sri Lanka dates back to King Devanampiyatissa’s time, when Sangamitta , the daughter of the great emperor Asoka , brought a sapling of the Bo Tree under which Buddha found enlightenment to Sri Lanka. She brought people who represented 18 crafts or professions, which laid the foundation for Sri Lanka to be renowned for its creative innovations and the incomparable skill of its master artisans and craftsmen.
Various handicrafts such as pottery, jewellery, clay and wood carvings, which have been found in different areas in the country, depict the rich culture and heritage Sri Lanka had back then and also the valuable connection it shares with its Indian counterparts.
The visit of Indian Prime Minister Dr. Narendra Singh Modi for the International Vesak Festival, which concluded on a grand scale recently, further highlighted the friendship and goodwill between these two nations. Arts and crafts represent a nation’s pride and the craftsmen who show their talent are the backbone of the country. It also depicts the talent of the artisan and promotes friendship and cultural bonds. Thus, the Sri Lankan public is yet to experience a spectacular event which combines two nations together in the world of handicraft, not only showcasing the talents of their master craftsmen but also creating an opportunity to promote friendship and goodwill and exchange new ideas and concepts between the two countries on one stage.
Shilpa Kala 2017 will showcase a colourful array of handicrafts and textiles identical to different parts in both countries. The event is organised by the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka together with the Hands of Sri Lanka - National Crafts Foundation, which is headed by Deshabandu Buddhi Keerthisena Dastkaari Haat Samiti and chaired by Jaya Jaitly as co-partners.
Twenty-five Indian and 14 Sri Lankan artisans are scheduled to participate in this gala festival. The main purpose of this event is to not only showcase cultural diversity but also enhance the livelihood of the artisans of both countries, making them get recognised for their hard work and get better value for their products.
A wide variety of handicraft and textile items from India will be displayed such as wood products, painted fabrics, fashion jewellery, handloom saris, handbags and leather products, while an attractive selection of Sri Lankan items depicting batik, wood carvings, lace, ceramics, Dumbara work, embroidery, silver and copperware, reed items and clayware will be on display.
Shilpa Kala is all about the artist as a crafts person and the exceptional crafts created by such artistes. As nations which have rich and diverse cultures, India and Sri Lanka have a lot to show to the world by way of their arts and crafts. It is also a means of showcasing new designs, concepts and knowledge while comparing quality and providing marketing opportunities. The Indian High Commission has extended its fullest support in organising this event, also depending on the huge success of last year’s exhibition.
Hands of Sri Lanka - National Crafts Foundation Chairman Deshabandu Dr. Keerthisena said:” We are hoping to have this exhibition on a grand scale. The Indian High Commission has extended its fullest support to make this event a success.”
Therefore, Shilpa Kala 2017 will certainly be a must-see experience for everyone, leaving unforgettable memories of the colourful world of arts and crafts.
