Galle Fort has become an emerging centre for arts and culture. Little spaces are opening on a monthly basis and the Galle Fort now offers a wide choice of boutiques and cafes.
Saskia Fernando Gallery Colombo opened four years ago in the building formerly known as ‘Mariposa’. Located on Dharmapala Mawatha, in the centre of Colombo, the gallery has become a must-see for any serious contemporary art enthusiast or collector.
This March, the new Saskia Fernando Gallery in Galle Fort will stage its first exhibition since opening its doors in December. The show will feature both art and design from artists living and working in Sri Lanka. The gallery will continue to act as a space presenting the cutting edge of contemporary art and design in Sri Lanka and is located at 1, Magistrates Square.
Saskia Fernando Gallery expanded its spaces to the Galle Fort in December 2012, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has become a must-see for anyone visiting the island.
Magistrates Square is one of the few locations in the Fort that is still shaded by trees and during the week, the bustle of the courts and the surrounding offices provide the perfect atmosphere for a gallery stroll. The gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on immediate appointment on Sundays and Mondays.
The exhibition ‘Sri Lankan Contemporary Art & Design’ will showcase a selection of leading contemporary artists and emerging designers. The exhibition presents the concept behind the new space that will continue to feature capsule collections by selected local designers to complement the cutting edge works by artists represented by Saskia Fernando Gallery.
Along with work by artists Saskia Pintelon, Jagath Weerasinghe, Jagath Ravindra, Mika Tennekoon and Kingsley Gunatillake, this exhibition will feature furniture, design and jewellery all locally designed and produced. ‘Sri Lankan Contemporary Art & Design’ opens today (9) at 4 p.m. and remain open until 10 April 2013.
