As F. Scott Fitzgerald quotes from the Great Gatsby, “And I like large parties. They’re so intimate. At small parties there isn’t any privacy,” indeed were the same vibes across the Mount Lavinia Hotel when New Year’s Eve was a theme of decadence, exuberance, certainly excessive, exuberance and grandeur, creating a portrait of the modern era in the roaring ’20s. As one reveller stated: “The no purse concept was fabulous as we did not pay for anything and the movie had everyone in Colombo talking and inspired a fashion craze, all the more reason for us to come all the way from Colombo to absolutely enjoy this exuberant theme.” Another guest mentioned: “MLH does elaborative and lavish parties but let me tell you this sealed the deal of a lavish party at the Mansion, the vintage cars at the courtyard, to the gaming lounge with Bally’s and the excessiveness was icing on the cake.” A crowd of over 700 partied the night away at the hotel and indeed it was a Gatsby party alright. As Mahika stated on how MLH measured the success of the event: “No one complained about anything because there was premium drinks, food and other goodies beyond their expectations. We had calculated that everyone would leave by 3 a.m. but to our surprise 5 a.m. was when all guests left, which meant it was a great party.”
