When LEAP was launched in 2011, Colombo was captivated by its uniqueness that blurred the line between jewellery and art. Less than a year later, designer Mihiri Devendra has launched the second major collection by LEAP.
Ultramarine – A collection that combines earthly treasures and celestial hues, uses a range of materials from Amethyst, Paua shell, Lapis Lazuli, Turquoise to Sea glass with silver. Mihiri’s unusual choices for materials are often exquisite and interesting findings of her travels and explorations across the island; “I like to use unconventional materials like sea glass, recycled glass and shells along with semi-precious stones and silver. This way I give value to everyday materials, showing that with a little bit of love and care discarded materials can be made very desirable,” she says.
LEAP Jewellery using Semi-precious stones, are again distinctive pieces owing to Mihiri’s interesting choice of stones. While most jewellery makers discard stones with natural cracks, Mihiri embraces their individuality. “I find that natural cracks on stones are birth marks that make it unique. They give more authenticity to the product for no one can duplicate a ‘flaw’; it’s nature’s finger print at its best.” This not only adds to the exquisiteness of LEAP pieces, but also makes each of them a one-of-a-kind piece that is impossible to replicate.
The new collection by LEAP is available at Barefoot Gallery 706 Galle Road, Colombo 3 and 41, Pedlar Street, Galle Fort. Contact Mihiri on 777301166 or find LEAP on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/LEAP-by-Mihiri/
