Home Lands Group illuminates UN Diyawanna Vesak Zone

Home Lands Group, the leading skyline changer in Colombo, joined hands with the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development, and UN Committee in lighting up the Diyatha area and Diyawanna Vesak zone, in this Vesak season.

This year, celebrating Vesak Festival, Diyawanna Vesak Zone has turned into the 14th United Nations International Vesak Commemoration Zone. The theme of this year event is ‘Buddhist Teachings for Social Justice and Sustainable World Peace’.

Vesak Poya day commemorates the birth, the Enlightenment and the demise of the Lord Buddha. In remembrance of this important day, people re-embrace and pay tribute to the lord Buddha who taught the world of Humanity, compassion, kindness, wisdom, peace and so many other virtues, not only through teaching but also being an extraordinary human being.

Revealing the world the truth of his teaching, the celebration of Vesak Poya Day, not only gathers Buddhists around the world, but also anyone who would like to experience this religious and cultural Festival. 

It was in 1950, at the World Buddhist Forum, a proposal was made by G.P. Malalasekera to recognise the Vesak Poya as a holiday. In 1999, former Foreign Minister late Lakshman Kadirgamar again made a request and as a result the UN General Assembly in 1999 declared an ‘International Day of Observance for Vesak’. 

Since then, every year, Buddhist countries are given the opportunity to host the celebrations of United Nations Day of Vesak and this is the first time Sri Lanka has been given the opportunity to host this festival. Including Sri Lanka, 10 other Asian countries were showcasing the influence of Buddhism in their social and cultural frameworks.

The event was celebrated this year with the participation of Buddhists and Buddhists leaders from around the world. The three-day celebration started on 12 May.

The UN Vesak zone was held around Diyatha Uyana, the area surrounding the Parliamentary Complex, Japan-Sri Lanka Friendship Road and Diyawanna Oya. Giving a modern touch to the traditional Vesak decorations, Diyawanna Oya and its surrounded area was a city of lights, with thousands of Vesak decorations illustrating the beauty of cultural richness of the country.

It was an honour for Home Lands to partner with the celebration of United Nation Vesak Day, by being a humble contributor to exhibits the official Logo of the UN day of Vesak at Parliament Junction and by placing 400 lotus-shaped lanterns along the Parliament road Junction and Diyatha Uyana to light up the environment creating illuminated displays.  It has also been a privileged to the company to add a cultural value to the neighbourhood city on which the foundation of Home Lands was initially built.

The company with its heartfelt willingness decided to collaborate with the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development, Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation (SLLR&DC) and UN Committee to stand beside the entire nation to unveil generations of Sri Lankan art and crafts blended with Vesak decorations in front of the whole world. 

As the real estate giant in the industry it has been a great platform in which the company could work together for a common purpose with the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development, the main body of redefining the landscape of the country.
