As part of the CSR initiative to support worthy causes that raise awareness on community health and welfare issues, Harpo’s Cafes & Restaurants donated wheelchairs worth Rs. 200,000 towards the ‘Around the Pearl’ initiative. The initiative is active to raise funds for wheelchairs for children affected by Cerebral Palsy and the persons affected by this non-progressive disorder of movement and posture. It is one of Sri Lanka’s most common permanent childhood disabilities.
The Around the Pearl event kicked off on 7 April, where 35 riders embarked on a life changing bicycle journey around the coast of Sri Lanka as their mission to help children suffering with Cerebral Palsy. Since the inception in 2014, Around the Pearl has raised substantial funds and donated over 1,100 wheelchairs as an initial step towards reaching the herculean challenge of 40,000 wheelchairs.
On 17 April the wheelchairs were handed over by MD Harpo Gooneratne to organiser of the event Nishan Udam.
