Gold Corporation owns ‘The Perth Mint’ which is Australia’s specialist precious metals mint. The Perth Mint has a legacy as being one of the oldest mints in the world, still operating from its original premises. The Perth Mint began as a branch of the British Royal Mint in 1899, during the last years of Queen Victoria’s reign. The purpose of its establishment was to refine the gold being mined from Western Australia’s rich gold fields and to turn it into sovereigns and half sovereigns for circulation in the Commonwealth and Government reserves.
When Britain went off the Gold Standard in 1931, the Perth Mint was entrusted with the responsibility of minting Australia’s circulating coinage, which it carried out till 1983. Soon after, it embarked on the Australian Precious Metal Coin Program under which the world renowned legal tender bullion coin series was launched. The culminating of this program was the minting and marketing of the Official Commemorative Coins and Medallions for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, as well as producing its gold, silver and bronze victory medals.
With more than a century of accumulated knowledge and experience in the elaborate art of coining, from initial rough sketch of the design to the fabrication of the mould and the final punching of the coin, the Perth Mint is today looked upon as an authority on coining.
