The Modern Group’s newest venture The Modern Grocer opens

The Modern Group of Companies has set forth with its newest venture, The Modern Grocer, ‘Your friendly neighbourhood superstore,’ at 51, R. G. Senanayake Mawatha (Gregory’s Road), Colombo 7.

Modern Group of Companies Director Sushan Peiris stated that the main objective of the supermarket was to create a customer-centric experience. “We are hoping to expand operations by opening more Modern Grocer supermarkets throughout the island,” he stated.

Offering an exclusive and extensive product range, the supermarket is equipped with all your favourite cheeses; both local and foreign and the premier Häagen-Dazs ice cream. The Modern Grocer shelves also stock the exclusive salad leaves range. The meat freezer carries the best cuts from Australian meat range and an exclusive cold cut range.

Head of Operations Sharen Peiris asserted that they will also offer opportunities for students who are seeking part-time employment. “Unfortunately, there’s a stigma against working part time jobs these days. Instead people are more focused on receiving their education and going straight towards filling out managerial and directorial positions. Therefore, it is difficult for them to retain the values that our parents had. This opportunity will be good for them to humble themselves. We will give them basic training as well,” said Peiris.

Modern Group of Companies Managing Director Priyanath Peiris said the idea was put forth during the first lockdown period the country went through in March 2020. “We thought of diverting from our present business which was waterproofing and specialized constructions. Consequently, we decided to shift our focus onto the food retail industry and we first initiated a mini-supermarket in Kirulapone and this is the second branch,” he said.

The Modern Group of Companies has two new projects under its belt; The Modern Grocer Supermarket chain and Cuisine Colombo, the restaurant.
