Pandit Jasraj was an acclaimed Indian classical vocalist who mesmerised music lovers around the globe for several decades. A proponent of the North Indian style of Hindustani classical music, he was also a Guru, training several generations of musicians in the nuances of Mewati Gharana. His death, on 17 August, at the age of 90, has left a deep void in the Indian cultural sphere. An online musical tribute to Pandit Jasraj would be paid by Rashmi Sangeetha, one of the emerging artists of Sri Lanka. Rashmi Sangeetha completed her Post graduate degree (M.Music) in North Indian classical music from Benaras Hindu University, India and is now working as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Visual and performing Arts.
She has been a jury member at various award ceremonies, including State Music Ceremony organised by the Department of Culture, Government of Sri Lanka. She has received several awards both in Sri Lanka and India, including the Pandith Om kaaranaatha Thakur Memorial Award twice for the most outstanding performance at the Post Graduate Degree.
Rashmi Sangeetha has also released several albums and sung songs for Sri Lankan tele-drams and films. She is also an “A” grade artiste in both classical and light music at the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.
