‘Preksha’ – Drama Festival 2020 organised by the Tower Hall Theater Foundation, was held from 24 to 30 July, at Tower Hall and Elphinstone theatres. The second phase of the festival will be commenced on 16 August and continue for a period of one month up to 15 September. Shows will be staged at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. in Tower Hall and Elphinstone theatres.
The ‘Sinhabahu’ stage play will be staged at the Elphinstone Theater, Maradana in August at
6:30, the opening day of the celebrations marking the 24th anniversary of the death of Prof.
Ediriweera Sarathchndra, who made a unique contribution to the advancement of Sinhala drama. Prof. K.N.O. Dharmadasa will deliver a lecture on ‘The incomparable service rendered to art by Prof. Ediriweera Sarathchandra’.
On 17 August, the second day of the festival, an event named ‘Mano Ranga Sobha’ will be held to pay homage to the late Dr. Jayalath Manorathna, a veteran actor in the field of Sri Lankan drama as well as an award-winning drama director. Drama songs of Jayalath Manorathna’s ‘Gurutharuwa’, Andarela, Thalamala Pipila and several other plays will be performed in this event by the actors of the play. The music is directed by Ranjith Balasuriya.
From 18 August to 15 September, dramas will be staged at Tower Hall and Elphinstone Theatres at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. A number of stage plays including Sinhabahu, Kuveni, Premathi
Jayathi Shoko, Bakmaha Akunu, Naribena, Jasaya saha Lenchina, Muhudu Puththu,
Sandakinduru, Trojan Kanthawo, Dhawala Bheeshana, Sudu Saha Kalu, Vikurthi, Sakkaya Ditthi and Rassa Parassa which marked milestones in the Sri Lankan drama, will be staged in the festival. In addition, a number of popular and critically acclaimed plays that have won state and youth awards are also to be staged at the event.
