Celebrating 10 years of spotlighting young designers and mother-daughter model duos, Chokolaate magazine’s Mother-Daughter Fashion Designer contest returns in 2019 with greater expectations. The much-awaited fashion spectacle will take place this year on 21 June at The Kingsbury.

2011 Shane Perera |
2012 Vindya Keerthiratne |
Commenting on the decade-long journey Chokolaate Founder and Managing Editor Michelle Gunasekara noted: “MDFD was an idea that I had so many years ago and to see the journey it has come thus far is very humbling. From the very first event in 2010 the show itself and the quality of the designers we showcase has grown in leaps and bounds. We have also been able to garner the support of some of the best brands, designers, fashion gurus and sponsors over the years. Their loyalty to the event is also testament to how much they believe in our cause.”
The fashion show this year will in similar fashion to the previous years have designers create outfits in the casual, sports and evening wear segments for a mother and daughter duo. The gala show however will be held at a new venue and feature a new layout and stage setting.
“I also want to take this opportunity to thank my Chokolaate team, the participants and winners from the last nine years and the sponsors who have made all this possible,” Michelle added.
The very first MDFD in 2010 was won by Sheruka Mahakumarage while 2011 saw Shane Perera walk away with the coveted title. Incidentally Shane is the only male contestant to have won the title in all its nine years. Vindya Keertirathne, Maryam Marikkar and Ranilu Singappullige took the honours in 2012, 2013, and 2014 respectively.
The year 2015 saw Natalie Yahampath win the top prize while in 2016 it was Viranda Bandara, the youngest competitor to win MDFD, who won the judges’ hearts at only the age of 16. Nisansala Deegala was 2017’s top designer while the reigning champion is Pramodhi Jayawardene.
These finalists have used MDFD as a stepping stone for their careers, and most of them now have their own brands or have pursued further education in fashion and design. Twelve finalists will be picked for this year’s competition by a panel of preliminary resource persons from the fashion and apparel industry and the winner will be adjudged at the finale by an eminent panel of judges. The mothers and daughter walking the ramp will be trained and choreographed by Rozanne Diasz while hair and make-up will be handled by Salon Chrissy Rozairo.
Moments of the event will be captured by the Official Photographer Praveen Mirando and Official Videographer Radicalz. Revport and GayaniBatz Media Crew will be the Official Online Media partner while Nehemiah Consultants will be the Official PR Partners.
Sounds and Lights for the event will be courtesy of Cool Tempo and the Official Florist will be Second Chance Flowers. The Official Radio Partner is Kiss FM and Real Radio. The official TV Partner is Art TV and Pulse will be the Lifestyle Media Partner.
