MMBL-Pathfinder celebrates New Year with harvest of bee’s honey at Riverpoint

To help foster the environment and to create ecological awareness among its staff, MMBL-Pathfinder recently initiated a pilot beekeeping project at its headquarters at Riverpoint, Peliyagoda.

Bee Honey

The bees feed upon the nectar of blossoms and flowers of plants and trees growing along the banks of the Kelani River. Staff members overlooking this initiative, symbolically handed over the bottles of honey from the first harvest and presented these to MMBL-Pathfinder Founder Milinda Moragoda, to coincide with the Sinhala/Tamil New Year. The honey will be served with tea to staff as well as guests who visit the office. Bees play a critical role in pollinating crops. According to the FAO, bees and other pollinators affect 35% of global agricultural land, supporting the production of 87 of the leading food crops worldwide, including coconut, and pollination-dependent crops are five times more valuable than those that do not need pollination. Worldwide, there has been an alarming decline in the bee population which some scientists believe to be linked to the overuse of dangerous pesticides and a reduction in forest cover.
