This refers to your article in the FT, ‘Justice must be served equally to all’. Very true, that is what the country wants from their leaders.
Ranil Wickremesinghe has shown his real colours by giving cover to his friend Malik Samarawickrama, a man who has been often embroiled in many controversial transactions, though nothing has been proved in public.
Politicians are in politics for the money. Anybody willing to give something more they are willing to shift their allegiance. The JVP Leader’s silence proves this point beyond doubt.
The Sri Lankan people have been taken for good ride by this Government. At last people of our country have come to terms that good governance, however much it looks easy to shout about on platform and introduce, is incredibly hard to sustain even for a short period of time.
The present Government is proving it over and over again. With each passing week and month, the level of trust and confidence and the enormous expectations the people placed on the incoming Government are evaporating. And they are evaporating fast, albeit the forced resignation of UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake, the former Minister of Finance and Tilak Marapana, only to be reappointed, also the unceremonious firing of Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe PC, the former Minister of Justice and Buddha Sasana.
The latest scandal to hit the UNP is the unholy connections between Malik Samarawickrama and businessman Anura Lokuwithana and if allegations are true it will only confirm the fear the people had of a UNP-Rajapaksa nexus. The people of Sri Lanka are finally opening their eyes. They thought that they displaced a regime of corrupt people, it surely does not seem to be so. History is repeating itself. If only the President kept to his pledge of doing one term and focused on governing, nothing of this sort would have happened.
President Sirisena is not the President of the SLFP. He is the President of Sri Lanka. He needs to start acting like the President of Sri Lanka.
