We could travel far and wide, indulge in the exotic cuisine of the Far East, sample the sophisticated delicacies of French gastronomy or savour aromatic Middle Eastern dishes, but as most Sri Lankans will agree, there’s nothing quite like returning to a hearty Sri Lankan meal.

Perhaps it is the texture and flavour of the coconut milk in the curries, or the almost addictive combination of spices infused in the dishes that make Sri Lankan cuisine a hot favourite, and Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo’s Hopper Night a most frequented event every month.

On Hopper Night, as the name suggests, the hotel’s chefs turn out hoppers in every imaginable taste and form, from cheese and chilli hoppers, masala hoppers, mutton fry hoppers and polos hoppers to the sweeter ‘pani appa’ and ‘kiri appa’ or the classic plain or egg hoppers.

However the hotel exceeds its promise of a ‘Hopper’ night with a complete buffet of Sri Lankan specialties including kottu roti, string hoppers, pol roti, pittu, fish ambulthiyal, tempered potatoes, cuttlefish, tripe curry, spicy beef curry, seeni sambol, katta sambol, pol sambol and an endless list of other local dishes.

Even the most resolute among us cannot resist the temptation of the delightful local desserts.  Anyone who has tasted the banana fritters at Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo will vouch that its taste is just as divine as the sweet aroma it exudes as the chefs prepare them à la minute at Hopper Night.  In addition, the dessert counter comprises dodol, pol toffee, asmi, lavariya, milk toffee, kokis, kavum, halapa, mung kavum amongst many others.

Stationed by the Poolside garden facing the Beira Lake it doesn’t get any more Sri Lankan than that.  Nostalgia sets in as the calypso band strums tunes from the golden days.  Simplicity is the secret ingredient of the night.

Bring along family, work buddies or friends and unwind on this Friday night, 24 June 2011 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. The Hopper Night buffet is priced at just Rs. 1,200++++ per person and even makes a thoughtful gift, for which gift vouchers are available at the Public Relations office during working hours or the hotel’s reception at other times.  For further information on Hopper Night the hotel may be reached on 2491998.
