Following the illustrious Hawker Street Spice Food Festival, the Taj Samudra Colombo opened its doors to a South African Food Festival at the Latitude. On 31 October, Taj Samudra General Manager Rohit Khosla, inaugurated the festival with guest of honour South African High Commissioner in Sri Lanka M. L. Makwabe.

Many South African expats living in Sri Lanka and other Colombo dwellers enjoyed the buffet spread presented by Master Chef Vivian Solomon of the Taj Cape Town. Among some of the favourites were Bobotie – a dish of minced meat with a mushy top layer or Frikkadels, braised meat patties flavoured with coriander and garlic.

Bunny Chow or butter chicken curry in hollowed out bread loaves with Chutney, a dish that is believed to have originated from the Indian community in South Africa, was probably the most talked about at the Hawker Street and again at the Latitude.

The Sweet Potato dish made a great accompaniment with the rest of the South African meat dishes available on the buffet. Oh and the South African Milktart – a dessert made the world over, but a distinct difference in flavour to our traditional Milk Toffees - were amazing.

Another favourite of many guests was, a Signature Cocktail prepared by Taj Samudra associate M.G. Mithara Ashanthi. This particular cocktail even won Ashanthi the Smirnoff Spice Cocktail award presented at the Spice Food Festival for its unique and fantastic flavour.

The festival was enjoyed by many satisfied guests and was definitely yet another thriving year of South African food and fun, at the Taj Samudra!
