The bakery industry leader in Sri Lanka, AB Mauri Lanka (Pvt) Limited is making a conscious effort to uplift the industry to international levels. Several initiatives have been launched in this effort, including the introduction of new products, technology developments and training.

“We are not only a bakery ingredient supplier, but a total bakery solutions provider,” said Business Manager-Bakery Asela Herath. “We help to open new bakeries and expansion of bakeries by providing technical advice and train bakers in hygiene in production and maintenance.” Elaborating on the training facilities provided to numerous parties, Herath said that the company had been training armed services personnel in their bakeries at no cost. Weekly training programmes have been held at the AB Mauri Training Centre since mid-September taking the service personnel in batches. Training had been started with Army personnel. The training centre can take in 30 at a time.

One year ago, AB Mauri tied up with the Vocational Training Authority (VTA), a public sector agency, to provide the National Vocational Qualification NVQ) to the students who finish.

Continuous training programmes are conducted for existing bakery contacts free of charge while the newcomers are charged a nominal fee. Nearly 30 products are covered in the training programme for newcomers, which includes both theory and practice.

Meanwhile, company personnel are provided with overseas training and factory visits to main bakers as and when the need arises.

Talking of new products, Herath said that taking into consideration the current trend of being health conscious, the company has introduced an eggless cake mix specially targeted at vegetarians. Healthy bread mixes using kurakkan, bran and multi-grain mixes have been introduced.  Outlining plans for the future, Herath said that in keeping with the current boom in the hotel industry, the company is ready to face the demand for new bakery-related products.

“We hope to make an indelible mark in uplifting the standards in the industrial sector – biscuit, ice cream, chocolates, cakes and wafers by supplying flavours, essences and bakery ingredients, fats, margarine and other products.”
