VTA and Oracle Academy to help 10,000 students develop skills

Industry-relevant skills for successful IT careers
The Vocational Training Authority (VTA) of Sri Lanka and Oracle Corporation Singapore Ltd have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement the Oracle Academy‘s Introduction to Computer Science program, and Advanced Computer Science program into the VTA’s Vocational Training Centers (VTC) island-wide.
This effort will, over a two year period will help prepare 10,000 students across 70 Vocational Training Centres for IT careers and assist VTA build a strong foundation of technology programs. In turn, this will help meet the growing local demand for a highly-skilled technology workforce.
Commenting on this historic MoU Colonel Darshana Rathnayaka (RSP, RWP), Chairman VTA said, “VTA is dedicated to developing ICT education for the youth in Sri Lanka to produce IT professionals and to provide them with industry exposure, making their skills more industry relevant both in public and private sectors.”
“IT certifications carry great significance in the competitive professional environment. VTA now has considerable links with international IT-related professional bodies to offer Sri Lankan youth training in the industry’s topmost certifications,” he added.
Under the MoU, Oracle Academy software curriculum, hosted technology, training, support and certification resources will be made available to students and faculty.
“Oracle Academy supports the drive toward developing ICT skills to equip the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders. The curriculum provides valuable hands-on training for students,” said Oracle Asia Pacific Oracle Education Initiatives Senior Director Krishna Sistla. “Our aim is to provide students with an innovative technology education to help them graduate into IT and business careers with a competitive edge,” he noted.
VTA faculty can take advantage of these resources within their computer science and business programs, helping to ensure that students gain important, industry-relevant skills. Operating under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills Development, the VTA is the largest vocational training network in the country catering to both the private and public sector.
“The collaboration between Oracle Academy and Vocational Training Authority (VTA), Sri Lanka, will help students understand the integration of computer science and business, providing them with relevant skills that prepare them for 21st century careers. Oracle has a lasting commitment to support computer science education designed to prepare students for the workplace,” said Oracle SAGE-West Senior Managing Director Ahsen Javed.
