Virtusa’s Chandika Mendis wins two prestigious CS&ES Achiever Awards

Virtusa Corporation, a global business consulting and IT outsourcing company that combines innovation, technology leadership and industry solutions to transform the customer experience, today announced that Chandika Mendis, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Engineering at Virtusa was honoured with two key awards at the first ever CS&ES Achiever Awards 2013, organised by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. Mendis, who has First Class Honours from the University of Moratuwa and carries over 15 years of experience in information technology, was recognised and awarded for an ‘Outstanding Contribution to ICT Industry’ and ‘ICT Business Innovation of the Year’. Chandika recently completed a decade with Virtusa. He has played a key role in the success story of Virtusa, contributing to the growth and maturity of the IT industry in Sri Lanka. The ‘ICT Business Innovation of the Year’ award was in recognition of ERA Insight, a comprehensive code quality and reuse governance solution used at Virtusa to govern software quality and adherence to best practices across Virtusa’s software development projects. ERA Insight has also been adopted by large enterprise clients to monitor and govern software development efficiencies across different teams and vendors. “I am honoured to be the recipient of this award, and receiving recognition from my alma mater is truly special,” said Mendis. “Strong software engineering discipline and rigour is a prerequisite for building high quality software that not only meets today’s business requirements but also transcends with time and gracefully evolves. Commenting on the award, Dr. Chandana Gamage, Head of Department at University of Moratuwa said: “The Department of Computer Science & Engineering initiated the CS&ES Achiever Awards with the primary intention of highlighting the contribution of its alumni to national development in diverse areas such as technology, enterprise and innovation. We expect such recognition to energise the professionals in our community to strive towards achieving goals that would take Sri Lanka to be a leader in IT.” Prof. Gamage added: “In this context, the winner of Outstanding Contribution to the ICT Industry Award in 2013, Chandika Mendis sets the achiever’s benchmark at a very high level. We are very proud of him as an alumnus whose multifaceted talent as a technologist, innovator, and a leader is not only helping his company in its growth journey but also strengthening Sri Lanka’s leadership position in the global IT industry.” The University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, is an independent state university established in 1978 and is renowned for producing quality graduates and innovative ideas. This year, the department of CSE introduced a new dimension to Sri Lanka’s ICT culture by organising the first ever awards ceremony to recognise and appreciate the contribution of CSE alumni towards the development and growth of the ICT industry of the country. The awards ceremony was organised along with the Annual General Meeting of the Computer Science and Engineering Society. The event was attended by over 200 participants including leading industry professionals, academics, undergraduates and young engineers.
