On 12 March, Volume Technology Centre held the second TechTalk event at their office in the World Trade Centre. TechTalk is an event where attendees can discuss latest technology and trends with industry experts, hold debates, discussions and demonstrations.
The event, which was held targeting the wider community within Colombo, under the topic ‘Indexing Strategies for Performance’ saw a significant increase in participants. The lecture, ‘Indexing Strategies for Performance’, saw an increase in the number of participants following the success of the first TechTalk.
The TechTalk was conducted by database expert and SQL Server Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Dinesh Priyankara who discussed the best database indexing strategies. High performance data storage is an often neglected area in Sri Lanka, and the participants were enthusiastic about the lecture.
TechTalk was born to educate the wider community outside of their own employees. The participants are mostly university students who might one day join Volume Technology Centre itself or create a path for themselves in the Technology industry through another avenue.
The UK based innovative software developing company have been conducting business from Sri Lanka for a relatively short period of time. In that time, the Sri Lankan office has been ensuring that the best technology is brought to the developer.
Volume Technology Centre works closely with SLIIT and AAT, holding seminars and guest lectures for the students. The students are also given one-year internships within the Technology Centre, giving them an opportunity to gather practical experience and put their knowledge into use.
Speaking of the improvements Sri Lanka has made in the technology industry, Volume Technology Centre Managing Director Benoit Alvarez stated that Sri Lanka is moving at a fast pace. Where 5 years ago recruitment was difficult as a result of Sri Lanka focusing more on legal systems and people were working with old technology, the Technology Centre has seen rapid developments in the industry.
Alvarez further went on to say that the second TechTalk was built upon the experiences the Technology Centre gathered through the first TechTalk and that the lecturers on both occasions helped make the events successful.
