It has been decided to set up Sri Lanka’s first information technology park at Hambantota.

Plans have been made to establish a full-fledged IT park at Hambantota in accordance with Hambantota District MP Namal Rajapaksa’s request.
While two institutions, one Singaporean and the other Indian, have already expressed their willingness to undertake the setting up of the IT park, and work in connection with this will commence shortly.
The ICT Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) says that it will offer the full support of the e-Sri Lanka initiative for the proposed Hambantota IT park.
ICTA Chairman Professor P. W. Epasinghe said that in particular ICTA’s professional skills would be provided for the relevant project at maximum level.
An initial discussion with regard to this was held at ICTA recently with the participation of Hambantota District MP Namal Rajapaksa.
On this occasion the ICTA Chairman appreciated the support given by the MP in this regard and attested that maximum co-operation would be provided for developing the Hambantota District. Five thousand students are expected to be provided educational facilities at the two universities that would be set up within the proposed IT park.
Similarly, while several institutions aimed at providing employment in the IT/BPO sector will be set up, plans are under way for the setting up of a computer assembling factory. Several senior officers of the ICTA including CEO Reshan Dewapura participated in the occasion.
