Dominant provider of

broadband internet services integrating WiFi with ADSL and cellular networks to expand its offerings and explore

monetisation opportunities

Ruckus Wireless, Inc. (NYSE: RKUS) announced today that Sri Lanka Telecom Plc (SLT), with the help of Ruckus channel partner Alepo, was  deploying Ruckus Smart WiFi products and technology throughout the country.

SLT is Sri Lanka’s national information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, and for over 150 years has been the leading broadband and backbone infrastructure services provider in the country.

With the help of Alepo, a worldwide leader in providing IT and network infrastructure software solutions for communications service providers (CSP), SLT is combining  Ruckus ZoneFlex™ indoor and  ZoneFlex outdoor access points (APs), centrally managed with two Ruckus SmartCell™ Gateways (SCGs), with Alepo BSS/OSS software infrastructure, to create a seamless, high-performance carrier-class Ruckus Smart WiFi network.

Sri Lanka Telecom plans to readily expand into new wireless services and markets, and launch multiple, profitable offerings, including single-use prepaid service, bundled subscriptions for existing broadband customers, automated offload for mobile users, and partnerships with external providers for roaming and wholesale.

The deployment follows successful interoperability testing with SLT conducted earlier this year with Alepo and Ruckus Wireless.

“Our joint solution with Alepo provides Sri Lanka Telecom with a comprehensive and seamlessly integrated platform to help enable them to maximise revenue in the growing wireless market,” said Sudarshan Boosupalli, managing director, India & SAARC region, Ruckus Wireless.

As service providers worldwide are looking to deploy WiFi networks based on Hotspot 2.0, Release 2, Alepo and Ruckus are demonstrating how service providers can leverage their existing infrastructure to maximise the potential of seamless and secure WiFi offload and integration with their existing cellular networks, and the monetisation opportunities it can offer.

“As the wealth and diversity of connected devices explodes, which now includes wearable devices, vehicles, and even home appliances, service providers demand more sophisticated and seamless infrastructure to manage and monetise data over WiFi,” said Dan Stern, VP of Sales at Alepo.

“Through our collaborative partnership with Ruckus – a world leader in wireless technology – we are giving service providers the most complete and proven WiFi solutions for increasing revenue, customer experience and network performance.”

Sri Lanka Telecom selected the Ruckus/Alepo carrier-class WiFi solution in order to bolster its ADSL data service offerings with a nationwide network of WiFi hotspots. With this deployment, SLT is able to provide WiFi access to existing postpaid ADSL customers, as well as prepaid casual or one-time customers. The solution also makes it simple for SLT to accurately manage the company’s wholesale partners and WiFi offload mobile partners.

“SLT’s Carrier-grade WiFi network provides a host of direct, targeted marketing opportunities for shop owners, companies and big brands within these environments. With our extensive country-wide fibre optic network, we’re able to provide the end-to-end infrastructure required delivering carrier-grade Wi-Fi to business locations as well as crowd-sourcing public places.

“We are aiming to adopt an aggressive expansion strategy for this solution, and already have a pipeline of additional retail sites that we will be launching very soon. Together, Alepo and Ruckus have delivered a robust and proven WiFi solution that will enable SLT to aggressively expand our WiFi footprint and to capitalise on the high demand for fast wireless broadband services nationwide,” said SLT Group CEO Dileepa Wijesundera.
