Special Awards at NBQSA 2010

The National Best Quality Software Awards (NBQSA) has announce several special awards at the 2010 edition of the annual competition to recognise excellence in software in the country.BCS the Chartered Institute for IT - Sri Lanka Section has been organising the National Best Quality Software Awards (NBQSA) since 1998. After 12 years, today NBQSA has evolved to be the only national event dedicated to showcase the local products developed by the ICT industry in Sri Lanka. In addition to the BCS awards there are several other special awards presented to the participants in various categories at this special event. They are: • ICT Lifetime Achievers Award • Best product developed using Microsoft Technologies • Award for Best Product with most innovative features • Best Product developed using Open Source technologies • Award for Best Product with Local Language components ICT Lifetime Achievers Award: In 2007, in addition to recognising the best ICT products, the organisers of NBQSA decided to recognise the individuals who have been instrumental in shaping the ICT landscape of Sri Lanka. The “ICT Lifetime Achievers Award” was created to cater to that need. This award would be presented to an individual only once in his or her lifetime for the yeoman service rendered towards the development and shaping of the Sri Lanka’s ICT environment. Among the criteria, the recipient minimum of 25 years continuously dedicated to the local ICT industry with a proven record of; Generating ICT employment in the industry Being instrumental in bringing foreign exchange to the country Taking leadership in reducing the digital divide in the country Being instrumental in introducing innovative ICT products or services Taken leadership to ICT Human Resources Development Contributed to the ICT policy planning, governance, law etc. In 2007 and 2008 Sri Lanka Information and Communication Technology Association (SLICTA) partnered BCS in recognising the ICT Lifetime Achievers award. Since 2009, Information Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) of Sri Lanka has being involved in partnering with BCS for this nationally significant achievement. As per the nature of this award presentation, the nomination is received from the industry and professional associations in Sri Lanka. These nominations are carefully evaluated by a panel of judges comprising of highly acclaimed individuals from various professional bodies and industry associations. Best Product developed using Microsoft Technologies: In 2006, the organisers of NBQSA decided to create a special award to recognise the support extended towards the NBQSA by Microsoft Sri Lanka. As the name indicates this Plaque is awarded to the best product developed using Microsoft Technologies. To qualify for this, the products competing should fulfill the following minimum criteria to get this award; A minimum threshold marks (60%) to receive any awards Product developed employing Microsoft development tools with highest score out of the products developed using MS tools Award for Best Product with Most Innovative Features: Last year, in 2009, the Organising Committee of NBQSA introduced a new recognition award to promote innovation and creativity among the young developers. Hence, the participants of Tertiary Student category who have developed their products containing most innovative features would receive this award. This is selected from the judges’ preference with the following minimum criteria; Scored the minimum threshold marks (60%) to receive any award display a higher number of innovative features Best Product developed using Open Source Technologies: In 2009, WSO2 volunteered to join the NBQSA in promoting Open Source Software development in Sri Lankan IT industry. Further WSO2 introduced a special trophy for the best product developed using Open Source Technologies. Hence, the participants who have developed their products using Open Source tools and services have a further chance of recognition for their effort. To qualify for this special award the products competing should fulfill the following minimum criteria: Scored the minimum threshold marks (60%) Developed employing Open source development tools Local content/contribution is more than 51% of the total product Scored the highest marks out of the products developed using Open source tools Award for Best Product with Local Language Components: This year, LK Domain Registry organisation joined hands with NBQSA in promoting Local Language in software development in Sri Lanka by introducing this special award. Hence, the participants who have developed their products containing components, modules and services have become eligible to get higher recognition for their effort. To qualify for this special award the products competing should fulfill the following minimum criteria: Receive the minimum threshold marks (60%) to receive any award Receive the highest marks out of the products that contain local language components
