Sri Lanka’s telecommunications giant SLT, enabled integrated, intelligent business communication solutions at the recently concluded CHOGM Media Centre in the BMICH. More than 900 Journalists, representing approximately 400 local and 500 foreign media organisations that included popular international media such as BBC, CNN, Al Jazeera, Sky News, AFP, Reuters, AP and The Hindu have reported and broadcast CHOGM activities from Sri Lanka to the world from this media centre. GlobeCast, the global content management and Distribution Company was appointed by the organisers to undertake the television transmission for the CHOGM in Sri Lanka. GlobeCast Africa Project Manager Stefan Wiederkehr said: “It was really exciting to witness and experience Sri Lanka’s readiness in everything.  As promised, it was an excellent ICT arrangement as well. I dealt with the team at Sri Lanka Telecom only via a few emails and I must say that I was surprised at their prompt response. The main problem we face in this nature of event is delivery from the suppliers. Some make huge promises in terms of service delivery, but which they actually do not deliver. In Sri Lanka, everything was ready according to my expectations and delivery was advanced to a couple days and it was a brilliant set up.” SLT was at the forefront in facilitating all the media broadcasts including those from GlobeCast from the CHOGM Media Centre via state-of-the-art communication solutions. The company believes that it was an excellent opportunity to enable all media personnel to report CHOGM activities in Sri Lanka to the world and also for people around the globe to get a first-hand experience of the developments taking place in Sri Lanka. Smooth operation CHOGM Head of IT Ashraf Patel said: “Everything went on very smoothly and was stable including coordination, monitoring and support given by the entire team at SLT which was amazing. In terms of ICT services, we were heavily reliant on SLT ILL for the entire CHOGM operation because we did many uploads and downloads, video streaming and other contents such as photography and reporting activities of all the forums. Media personnel who attended the CHOGM used ILL to feed and stream content to their respective countries in real time. All the information that was dealt with was handled and broadcast in real-time. “The most important thing that I witnessed in Sri Lanka was that we had fibre to the main locations where CHOGM meetings took place and we were able to deliver services with the highest level of reliability to ensure smooth operations. Also in terms of handsets and wireless connectivity, Sri Lanka is on par with developed countries that use high tech systems and connectivity,” he added. SLT’s communication solutions comprise multiple services including optical fibre connectivity and high bandwidth Carrier-grade Wi-Fi connectivity powered by dedicated business internet connections (ILL - Internet Leased Line) to ensure highest quality, speed, reliability and uninterrupted service. Symmetric bandwidth SLT Fixed Broadband services with symmetric bandwidth have been provided to support uploading media content such as news posts, high-resolution photos and videos etc. Further virtual private network connectivity, internet data centre facility, local area networks, ethernet connectivity, fixed broadband services, high speed Wi-Fi access, telephone and fax services and ICT equipment were provided to CHOGM event venues. Patel added: “At CHOGM events, everything relies on the IT platform. Therefore the availability of a reliable ICT platform like what was provided for CHOGM by Sri Lanka Telecom is extremely important and critical to any international conference of the dimensions of CHOGM.” SLT Group CEO Lalith De Silva said: “We are dedicated to empower all the communities and businesses in the country to facilitate their growth. We are 110% supportive of the country’s goals by developing, maintaining and upgrading the national telecommunication backbone. “SLT remains focused on service and product excellence and committed to the nation’s vision of ‘SMART Sri Lanka’ by following the right policies and strategies and thereby building inclusive digital Sri Lanka. The company continues to take the pledge of being ‘One Country, One Voice’ to heart and every endeavor is taken to unite the people of the nation as one.” SLT’s specially designed Wi-Fi access network for CHOGM, which was backhauled by a high speed, reliable and resilient optical fibre ring architecture ensuring high availability of services was the largest ever Wi-Fi deployment in Sri Lanka with the capability of facilitating 2,500 concurrent  users. With the successful deployment of ICT facilities to the CHOGM, SLT lies poised to undertake the challenge of staging any future mega conference or meeting to be held in our country with confidence.
