SLIIT Computing commences enrollment for BSc. in IT

Paving the way for students to keep their knowledge up-to-date in this fast-moving field of Information Technology, SLIIT Computing, in association with SLIIT has commenced enrollment for the Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology (IT). SLIIT Computing has been conducting the BSc in IT program for the past 10 years. This popular industry-oriented three year Degree Program is awarded by SLIIT and approved by the University Grants Commission. Applications for the next intake (2014) close on 25 October for classes to commence on the 2 December. The BSc. in IT will equips learners with the necessary skills and understanding to develop a career in the wider area of IT project development, where software engineering skills, practical web, database and multimedia skills are required. This program enables ability to critically evaluate, design, meet specifications, ascertain requirements, create solutions and communicate ideas to other computing professionals and end users in the IT industry. “The degree will nurture a student’s development not just as an IT expert, but also as a creative thinker, allowing one to learn and explore through a combination of technology and imagination. A blend of theory and practice gives those who want to enter into the workforce an edge, with a sound academic background which gives a competitive advantage over others,” commented Professor Lalith Gamage, President and CEO of SLIIT. He went on to note that prospective students can make a career in the IT industry through a mix of academic, professional and practical work, with opportunities such as industry-collaborated professional mentoring support and internships. The entry requirement for this degree program is a one or more passes at the G.C.E A/L examination (Sri Lanka/London) in any discipline and a pass at the aptitude test conducted by SLIIT Computing. However, it is observed that students with three passes at the G.C.E A/Levels follow this program for better prospects with the industry. Students awaiting results of the G.C.E A/L examination are also eligible to apply. To help students have a broader base and flexibility within the IT industry, the final year of the program allows for selection from a wide range of modules, graduating with a BSC in IT with a specialization in Information Technology or Interactive Multimedia Technology. Arrangements are also in place to follow a foreign degree program with a partner university like: Sheffield Hallam University, UK, Deakin University, Australia, University of South Australia and Southeast Missouri State University, USA. Commenting on student activities, Professor S. Karunaratne, Chairman of SLIIT, said: “In addition to formal study, our students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities such as the National Best Quality Software Awards (NBQSA), e-Swabhimani and Motorola Solution/SLASSCOM university competitions; to participate in conferences and publish articles in research journals including the prestigious IEEE Research Publication. Students who perform well in their academia are prepared for and given the chance to work through industrial placements and internships.” Selected students have the chance of learning in a friendly study environment with highly qualified academic staff. Studying the BSc. in IT program through SLIIT Computing will provide students with pathways to higher degree programs – local and overseas- and job opportunities on completion, all at an affordable cost.
