SLASSCOM (Sri Lanka Association of Software and Service Companies) renewed its strategic partnership with EDEX for the third year, for the forthcoming EDEX Expo 2013. SLASSCOM strives to create awareness on the IT and BPO industries, in terms of new trends and employment opportunities among the youth through many faceted approaches to reach out to students, teachers and parents in urban and rural areas of Sri Lanka.

SLASSCOM notes that Sri Lanka’s low literacy rate can be considered as a challenge for opportunity and change on the IT/ BPO industry. From left: EDEX Treasurer Kushan de Silva, SLASSCOM Executive Director Imran Furkan,  EDEX Chairman Kamal Abeysinghe, and Royal College Union Treasurer Lalith CooraySujiva Devaraja, Chairman, SLASSCOM stated, “SLASSCOM treasures its participation at the EDEX exhibition and its strategic partner status with the whole EDEX ecosphere. Our joint goals of promoting a wide array of educational and career choices to the youth of today is in the national interest and we are delighted to partner EDEX for the third consecutive year, and wish EDEX on its 10th anniversary celebrations. We whole heartedly endorse and support EDEX and its highly laudable objectives.”

SLASSCOM’s strategic partnership with EDEX will jointly endeavour to create greater awareness amongst Sri Lanka’s youth of the lucrative and exciting career opportunities available in the IT/ BPO and knowledge services Industry.

Devaraja noted that the ‘clean and green’ industry offers the ideal solution for the large number of educated youth entering the job market who aspire to get well paid jobs. The industry also lends itself very well to entrepreneurship which can produce ‘job-creators’ rather than ‘job seekers’.

All SLASSCOM’s endeavours are geared towards Sri Lanka’s national goal of becoming a knowledge economy, achieving a target of US$ 1 billion in revenue and providing employment to over 80,000 by 2016. A key prerequisite for this growth to be realised is acceleration of human resources capacity development in the industry.

The SLASSCOM Future Careers initiative launched at EDEX 2011 is aimed at expanding the talent pool available to the industry as part of this capacity building program. This year too, the SLASSCOM Future Careers initiative at EDEX 2013 will focus on connecting Sri Lankan youth to exciting job opportunities in the knowledge service industry, gearing towards becoming global citizens.

At EDEX Expo 2013, SLASSCOM along with its member organisations will educate students and parents about a wide array of options available in IT and BPO sectors, highlighting skills that will empower them to enter this industry and increase their earning potential. Students can also join online at www.FutureCareers.lk to learn about the industry.

“Many of the industry players have numerous in house training programs for new recruits and the starting point for information is on www.slasscom.lk  for those of individual industry players,” Devaraja noted further.

Kamal Abeysinghe, Chairman EDEX said, “As the IT/BPO industry is one of the most resilient industries in the country, and is an attractive and lucrative option for youth, we are extremely pleased and thankful for the continuity of the strategic partnership of SLASSCOM.”

The 10th EDEX Expo will be held on 18, 19 and 20 January 2013 at BMICH Colombo and on 25 and 26 January at the Kandy City Centre, Kandy, respectively. For further details, please contact the EDEX Secretariat on 0727567000/ 5521497, e-mail: [email protected], website: www.edex.lk.
