Sri Lanka has been leading the South Asian region in deploying of the new technologies in the telecommunication sector.
The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has been proactive in introducing new technologies where Sri Lanka was the first to introduce 3G network followed by 3.5G network in South Asia.
Now Sri Lanka has pioneered in the region in 4G technology with Colombo becoming the first 4G enabled city in South Asia through the launch of 4G pilot networks by few of the mobile operators recently. The world’s first 4G service was launched in Sweden in December 2009.
In line with the industry trend Sierra Global Network Ltd., a leading telecommunication infrastructure development and managed services firm has been in the forefront in implementing new technologies to Sri Lanka market through their in-house technical expert teams. Sierra Global has been recently awarded to undertake the first 100 of 4G base station sites in Sri Lanka which has been commenced last week in selected locations in Colombo.
“In May 2005 Sierra Global has installed and commissioned the first CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) network in Sri Lanka for one of the country’s leading private fixed telecom operators, Lanka Bell through a contract with Huawei Technologies of China. With the assistance of Sierra Global, Lanka Bell has launched the first of its 150 new CDMA base station sites using then the cutting edge technology CDMA 2000-1X well ahead of the three month deadline given by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL),” said Dr. Arosha Fernando, Director/CEO of Sierra Global.
“This was followed by Sierra Global taking the leading role in implementation of 3G and 3.5G networks in Sri Lanka, and now with the 4G network. Our company’s strategy has always been to be the leader in the market and mostly we have achieved this through being first to learn the latest technology. We have reached this by providing the required R&D facilities and training to our technical staff on a regular basis including some selected technical courses from overseas countries such as Sweden, France, Malaysia and China. We are very much excited to undertake the work on the latest technology 4G also known as LTE (Long Term Evolution) which is a standard for wireless communication of high-speed data for mobile phones and data terminals,” Dr. Arosha further added.
