Sandip Das out of SLT Board

Maxis Berhad Malaysia CEO Sandip Das has resigned from the Board of Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) effective last week. Das was first appointed to SLT Board in June 2008 whilst he also served on the Mobitel Board.

Das’s resignation follows his exit from Maxis recently. His tenure as CEO of Maxis was to end on 30 June 2013 and had requested for an early release from office.  

Maxis had previously announced that it will appoint former Vodafone Executive Johan Dennelind in December as its new CEO from July 1, 2013.

Global Telecommunications Holdings NV., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Usaha Tegas Sdn Bhd (UT), a Malaysia based investment holding company owns 45% stake in SLT. UT also owns Maxis in Malaysia.

Das was among four Maxis nominees on the SLT Board. Others are C.C. Beng, J. J Blatt and L. Paratz.

Indian media reports said Das, will join Reliance Industries as the head of its 4G mobile venture.

Das was the Chief Executive Officer of Maxis Communications Berhad. He also served as Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director on the Board of Maxis Berhad, Malaysia and as a Director on the Board of Aircel, India.

He was listed as one of the 100 most powerful people in the telecoms industry worldwide in Global Telecoms Business for three years running in the 2012, 2011 and 2010 GTB Power100 list. He was also voted as the Best CEO in Malaysia by FinanceAsia’s ‘Asia’s Best Managed Companies’ country listings in 2012.

Sandip has more than 33 years of work experience in the consumer durable, automobile and telecommunications industries. Prior to Maxis, he was Deputy Managing Director and a Director on the Board of Hutchison Essar Limited (now known as Vodafone Essar Limited, India).

The current Board of Sri Lanka Telecom comprises Nimal Welgama (Chairman), Lalith De Silva (CEO), C.C. Beng, J.J. Blatt, J. Dharmadasa, S. Rajapaksa, K. Indatissa, L. Paratz and S.P. Wellappili.
