Samsung Electronics yesterday unveiled its highly-anticipated Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge to the Sri Lankan media in an event held at the Nelum Pokuna theatre in Colombo. The new entries into the Samsung Galaxy smartphone series boast unique designs and improved specifications as the mobile giant attempts to improve on the standards set by previous Galaxy phones.
Samsung stated that its R&D team had been working along with a team of engineers in developing modern processor software that makes the device the most powerful smartphone in the market today.
Samsung Southwest Asia Corporate Communications Vice President Rajeev Mishra stressed the importance of R&D at Samsung, highlighting the consumer interactions it prioritises in developing products and introducing them to any market.
“We invest a lot in our R&D. We’ve spent over $ 14 billion on R&D and you’ll find that that is the reason why our products are closest to what the consumers want,” he said.
Revealing the special features and improvements on the S6, Samsung revealed that the phone will come with a 5.1” Quad HD 577ppi Super AMOLED display while the S6 Edge will have a similar display but with the Dual Edge technology added. The phones will both contain a Quad 2.1GHz and Quad 1.5GHz Octacore processor.
One of the more notable improvements seen in the two products is the camera which includes features such as HDR, Out Focus, Virtual Shot and video highlights. The phones have a 16MP OIS rear camera as well as a 5MP front camera for better self portraits. Its lighting functionality allows it to be usable even in very low lighting conditions as demonstrations illustrated its capabilities in comparison to its competitors.
However, the most prominent advancement comes in its battery life and the process of charging the devices. Samsung stated that the phone can be fully charged in as little as 30 minutes, which they claimed was half the time it takes to fully charge competing smartphone brands like the Apple iPhone 6. Furthermore, a short 10-minute charge would allow its user to utilise the device for a period of four hours. Significantly, the battery is no longer changeable, meaning that the phones will feature a built-in battery that could even be charged wirelessly. The S6 and S6 Edge are thin (6.8mm/7mm) are also light in weight, weighing in at just 138 g and 132 g respectively. The phones feature the world’s first 14 nm mobile processor with a 64-bit platform, new PRDDR4 memory system and a UFS 2.0 flash memory which provides a higher performance with lower power consumption.
Samsung Sri Lanka Managing Director Youngmin Shin stated that Samsung was raising the bar for design, craftsmanship and performance through these two products while shedding some light into Samsung’s core philosophy of ‘Design with Purpose’. “The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge will transform the smartphone market in Sri Lanka, offering a superlative experience, far ahead of any other devices in the market. I am very excited that Sri Lankan consumers will be among the first to experience the devices of the future,” he said.
The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will be available in Sri Lanka from mid April 2015 (32GB) in White Pearl, Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum. The S6 will also be sold in Blue Topaz while the S6 Edge will also be available in Green Emerald. The S6 and S6 Edge are available for pre-order now and will be priced at Rs. 114,990 and Rs. 134,990 respectively.
