Under the project of setting up 1,000 Wi-Fi zones throughout the island which provide free internet facilities, steps are now being taken to set up free Wi-Fi zones for trade centres.

The ICT Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) says that this free Wi-Fi facility is scheduled to be set up at all dedicated economic centres. The free Wi-Fi facility is already in place at the dedicated economic centre in Narahenpita, Tripoli trade centre in Maradana and the floating trade complex in Colombo Fort.

According to ICTA, this free Wi-Fi facility is scheduled to be set up at the Beruwala ‘Pattakade’ gem fair within the next few days.

Providing this free Wi-Fi facility in these trade centres will be a great help. It will enable both sellers and buyers at these centres to carry out their business activities in an efficient manner, says ICTA.

By now 100 free Wi-Fi zones have been set up throughout the country.

The first free Wi-Fi zone under this project was set up by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Colombo Fort Railway station last March.

Under this project a 100 MB free connectivity per citizen per month and can be availed of at a speed of 512Kbps.
