The ICT Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) hosted the e-Swabhimani Award Gala 2014 recently (5) at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel, Colombo. It was held under the patronage of Telecommunication and Information Technology Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya and ICTA Chairman, Senior Presidential Advisor and Peradeniya University Chancellor Prof. P. W. Epasinghe. Addressing the audience at the award ceremony, Telecommunication and Information Technology Minister Ranjith Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said: “New creations should be developed, but it is very important that we appreciate the developers. ICTA has taken steps to select the developers in a transparent manner from a large number of competitors and grant them awards. ICT literacy that was about 4% about a decade ago has now exceeded the 50% mark. Recognition has much to do with improvement. This is so with the increase in the ICT literacy rate as well as in other great strides Sri Lanka has made in ICT both in Sri Lanka and in the international community.” Welcoming the participants in the award ceremony ICTA CEO Reshan Dewapura said: “I am pleased to welcome you at an important occasion in the road map of taking the benefits of information and communication technology to every citizen. We are highly pleased as the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka to be able to organise the annual e-Swabhimani award ceremony which is a very important event in the country’s Information Technology calendar. Through e-Swabhimani we have been able to improve local skills. We have been able to create contents of an international standard.” Explaining the aim of e-Swabhimani, Dewapura said: “On this occasion I wish to reiterate that the main purpose of the e-Swabhimani award is to give national recognition to local talents, especially those in the information technology sector. In doing so we are implementing a direction given in the Mahinda Chinthana Vision for the Future, the policy statement of the Government.” Pix by Lasantha Kumara
