Laksala, the oldest and most well known gift and souvenir boutique for authentic Sri Lankan artefacts, bagged a Bronze award under the Government category at the recently-concluded Best Sri Lankan Website competition. The award was in recognition of the outstanding technical attributes, design and content of the company website www.laksala.gov.lk. Each website was judged following strict selection criteria and Laksala was able to abide by all stringent conditions. The four broad categories for judging were; Technical prowess, Design capability, Content and Interaction. Each category had its own unique features, such as; completeness, navigation, design, quantity, quality and privacy. The vibrant website outlines the vision, mission, core values, store locater’s and annual reports of the state owned gift shop. While portraying all of Sri Lanka under one roof, the user friendly nature, coupled with the flashy images, clear architecture, creative and rich information on each product, served as contributing factors to Laksala receiving the Bronze award. Laksala, which was once an underperforming entity, was revamped under a new restructuring and re modification process. As a result the web presence was an initiative taken by the Laksala team to support the turn around and forward vision of the organisation. Laksala.gov.lk is an e-commerce site, which features many categories, such as tea, spices, clothes, fabrics, art, crafts, leather and ceramics. With the aim of being a commercially viable, socially responsible marketing organisation, the variety of products featured on the site, which can be purchased online, will be shipped through reputed courier services. While each product has a basic description, the selling price can be viewed in a range of currencies making it easier for customers from around the world to purchase the intricate, handmade products. Elated by the win, Laksala Chairman and CEO Anil Koswatte said: “The specialty of our site is that one does not have to be tech savvy; it is user-friendly and accessible globally. Having an efficient website, enables us to build our image, create awareness among our target audience and ultimately the sales we generate via our website will benefit the organisation. We seek to enhance the site further, by including more products into each category, adding more in depth information about the industry and our suppliers from various parts of the island.” Since its inception in 2009, the web based competition which is conducted by the LK domain registry, provides an opportunity for companies who have a local presence and possess a .lk website to showcase their websites and the Sri Lankan web identity.
