Datacard Corp USA, the world leader in secure identity and financial card issuance systems recently conferred two awards to Data Management Systems Ltd. (DMS) – the local distributor for Datacard systems and solutions – for its outstanding achievements in selling and successfully implementing hundreds of secure card based system solutions to some very large and blue chip companies in Sri Lanka and for being the preferred supplier of financial cards (debit, credit, chip-based smart and ATM cards) issuance systems commanding  90% market share in Sri Lanka.

The awards were conferred at Datacard’s Annual Distributor Conference and Meeting held in Phuket, Thailand, last week. One of the awards received by DMS was the prestigious ‘Breakthrough Award’ conferred for winning large contracts for new business in a relatively small market when compared with other larger and more developed markets in the same geography such as China, India, Japan, Korea, Indonesia and Thailand.

Datacard USA dominates the card issuance and personalisation business, and 90% of all financial cards issued worldwide are from a Datacard system installed somewhere in the world. While Datacard systems also issue 80% of all GSM chip cards installed on mobile phones all over the planet, they also issue highly secure national identity cards and passports with integrated biometrics in most advanced countries.

It is a privately owned company of the Quandt family of Germany who are listed among the top 15 in Forbes magazine’s annual list of Billionaires and they also own Rolls Royce and BMW car companies.

DMS, a pioneer IT solutions provider and systems integrator, introduced and has been transferring cutting edge IT solutions to Sri Lanka since 1977. While these high tech solutions have made Sri Lanka more productive for over 35 years, today DMS represents the world’s leading IT companies and employs over 500 people. DMS also implemented the first system to issue highly-secure EMV chip based credit cards and debit cards (smart cards) in Sri Lanka a few months ago and that solution too was from Datacard USA.

Among other world leading IT companies that DMS represents in Sri Lanka is IBM, as an advanced business partner, and Diebold Inc., the American leader in ATMs, as its distributor. DMS has sold ATMs to more banks and financial institutions than any other vendor in Sri Lanka and it is the only company that supplies intelligent-deposit ATMs which are envelope-less cheque and cash deposit capable ATMs, introduced to Sri Lanka in 2005.  These ATMs permit banks to extend immediate credit for cash deposits on a 24 hour, seven day basis, and DMS-Diebold are also the only vendors to have implemented cheque deposits at ATMs without envelopes. As the ATM network is integrated with each banks’ core banking software, with cheque truncation beings initiated at the point of deposit of each cheque, which is the ATM, the relevant data in each cheque is transferred to LankaClear electronically for processing, thereby enabling faster realisation and credit of proceeds to customer accounts.

These conveniences have eliminated queues at banks as research conducted by banks has shown that up to 80% of people standing in queues in Sri Lanka wait to carry out deposits of cash and cheques.
