Google is working closely with many organisations in Sri Lanka to run an online shopping festival hosted at www.megapola.lk running until 10 April 2016.

Dubbed “Avurudu Megapola”, this online shopping event will last for 20 days and will focus on exclusive, online only discounts on smartphones, gadgets, consumer goods and services that are only available online during this special period.

Sri Lanka has approximately six million people online, many of whom are experiencing the web for the first time via smartphones. The internet gives people easy access to everything from education to entertainment and beyond. But one of the most important things people do online is, of course, shopping. “Avurudu Megapola” is a virtual shopping festival being held right where the newwave of buyers are congregating — online on mobile.

Rajan Anandan, Vice President South and South East Asia, Google commented, “Sri Lanka has one of the highest GDPs/capita in South Asia with an internet penetration of over 30%, with some of the most affordable connectivity costs in the world. Most digital consumers are already researching products and services online. The country is primed for an e-commerce revolution and we hope that initiatives like ‘Avurudu Megapola’ will help catalyse the industry.”

Google is working with Wow.lk and Dialog as the e-commerce partner for this event. In addition to this, Google is partnering with Nations Trust Bank and American Express as the official credit card partner, ReapDigital as the digital partner and News 1st, the news network owned and operated by The Capital Maharaja Organisation as the Electronic Media partners.

“Avurudu Megapola is an initiative to help complete the research and purchase loop, and we hope the exclusive deals will introduce the online shopping experience to an even wider audience of Sri Lankans,” added Rajan.
