The Women’s Chamber for Digital, Sri Lanka is an initiative which was proposed by Minister of Digital Infrastructure and Information Technology (MDIIT) Minister Ajith P. Perera and facilitated by Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) personnel.
The Women’s Chamber for Digital, Sri Lanka was envisioned to be a driving force of the Government’s policy on women empowerment whilst accelerating Sri Lanka’s digital economic growth by empowered women.
The entity is supported by three Ministries – namely, Ministry of Digital Infrastructure and Information Technology, Ministry of Women and Child Affairs, Ministry of Education – and many pioneering women leaders in the country.
The chamber will assist the overall objectives via four E’s: education, entrepreneurship, engagement and empowerment, whilst implementing projects to support women through advocacy, mentoring and guidance, networking and policy-level developments.
Overall, the chamber will look into a more holistic approach to getting more women empowered to pursue a career in IT or being digitally empowered to start their own business venture. The chamber will run its own national-level flagship projects and also collaborate and actively engage with partner entities locally and internationally to synchronise on similar initiatives in line with its overall mandate.
The objectives of the Women’s Chamber for Digital, Sri Lanka include encouraging, supporting and providing guidance to female tech entrepreneurs; empowering and advancing women leadership via fostering professional development and growth; to increase women participation and the retention rate in the digital industry; to play an advisory role in government policymaking for women empowerment within the digital industry, and to lobby and influence legislative policies on challenges facing women at work.
The launch of the Women’s Chamber for Digital, Sri Lanka was held on 27 June at the Ministry of Digital Infrastructure and Information Technology.
