Wijeya Newspapers, a name that is synonyms with the premiere newspaper industry in Sri Lanka, has joined with Infotel 2017 as the Official Print Media Partner. Organised by the Federation of Information Technology Industry Sri Lanka (FITIS), Infotel is South Asia’s oldest and most prestigious Information and Communication Technology (ICT) exposition. This year’s event is scheduled to be held from 1 to 5 November at the BMICH in Colombo, under the theme ‘Towards a Digital Economy’.
Established in 1979, Wijeya Newspapers has today become the leading newspaper group in Sri Lanka recording the highest annual turnover. Wijeya Newspapers currently has been publishing Daily Lankadeepa, Sunday Lankadeepa, Adha, Desaya, Daily Mirror, Sunday Times and Daily FT (the only Financial Times Daily Newspaper in Sri Lanka). Wijeya Newspapers has been the recipient of coveted industry awards such as SLIM-Nielsen, Superbrand, Editors Guild and Sri Lanka Association of Printers.
Expressing his views on the tie-up, Wijeya Newspapers Assistant General Manager, Brands and Promotions Sujith Pathirannehe observed: “Wijeya Newspapers has for the past several years taken part in Infotel as the official print media partner and the main reason why we are continuing to actively take part is because we consider Infotel to be a key IT event in Sri Lanka. Being a premiere newspaper company, we believe that our presence is very important. It is the cornerstone event of Sri Lankan ICT industry and there is massive awareness surrounding it. I have seen certain years where there was room for improvement however, Infotel and their message remains very key towards our readership. It is in my belief the top-rated IT event in Sri Lanka. We have set up a digital division to ensure this transition and we are making a very strong effort to digitise. We acknowledge that in any sector be it agriculture, print or anything else, digital will play a key role. In other words, the future will become digital regardless of we liking it or not.’’
Speaking on Wijeya Newspapers teaming up with INFOTEL 2017 as its official print media partner, INFOTEL 2017 Main Organising Committee Publicity Chairman Derrick Ferdinando said: “Wijeya Newspapers have been responsible for some of the biggest leaps of the print industry and dominating the Sri Lanka newspaper industry for many years. With their push towards digitisation and extending support towards digitisation of Sri Lanka is set to become a milestone and will also be a precedent for many others in the industry. Wijeya Newspapers brings with it considerable experience and readership throughout Sri Lanka and will undoubtedly become a valuable asset to Infotel 2017 and in many years to come as it has been in the past. Apart from that Wijeya is also committed to the uplifting of the ICT industry. Wijeya Newspapers is publishing ‘Pariganaka’, a magazine dedicated for ICT. In addition, Daily FT, Daily Mirror and Sunday Times are continuously conducting ICT pages. They have been making awareness of the ICT industry and general public related ICT matters such as new trends, problems, solutions and policies. Also Sunday Times, Daily Mirror and specially Daily FT are giving free publicity for IT companies, IT events and launch of new IT products and services and I appreciate it on behalf of FITIS.”
