The opening of QBITS, Sri Lanka’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) Innovation Lab was held last week at the University of Moratuwa. CodeGen International Ltd., pioneered the launch, in partnership with the University of Moratuwa, and is the first ever fully funded PhD program in the country.

The QBITS AI Lab, was declared open by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. A. K.W. Jayawardane of the University of Moratuwa and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Harsha Subasinghe of CodeGen, in the presence of the Deans of Faculties and relevant Heads of Departments of the university, along with President Legal and Operations, Kusal Subasinghe and the Management of CodeGen.

With the objective of building an intelligent ecosystem through an industry-academia collaboration, both CodeGen and the University of Moratuwa is set to establish a knowledge base within the university itself, for Sri Lanka to capture a high value, niche market segment, designing complex algorithms, by our very own talent here in Sri Lanka. This collaboration introduces advanced research based culture in Sri Lanka, for multiple industries with multidisciplinary applications. QBITS lab will carry out high-end research, focusing on novel algorithms in AI, applied towards real world problems that will have a very high commercial value.

The introduction of advanced technologies through intensive research, brings out unique algorithms based on mathematical modelling with cross disciplinary amalgamations such as mechanical, electronics and robotics, for the end product to be of extreme commercial value, different from everything else in the Market. QBITS is where complex problems, relevant to the future are looked at, by using optimisation techniques that go beyond the use of existing toolkits to forecast, maximise performance and decision-making processes. These research initiatives are fully funded by CodeGen, from college to admin fees, and remuneration of the student throughout the PhD.

“QBITS is now a benchmark for research based post graduate education; a knowledge enterprise, that is set to produce the best and most sought after, globally employable graduates through research, innovation and entrepreneurship. The University of Moratuwa is proud to be a custodian of a Private Public Partnership (PPP), that empowers and builds, national innovation strategies through inter and multi-disciplinary alliances,” stated University of Moratuwa Vice Chancellor Prof. A.K.W. Jayawardane.

CodeGen International Chief Executive Office Dr. Harsha Subasinghe stated, “QBITS provides opportunities for students to invent and design world class products that carry a high commercial value in the real world, with precision application and go-to market potential backed by CodeGen, and delivered through the University.

The focus is to develop new and unique algorithms that can take Sri Lanka towards a multibillion dollar product, with precision application and intelligent synchronisation of multiple activities via extensive research on AI.” As a key navigator in the industry, CodeGen has taken up the task, to enhance the accreditation of the Sri Lankan Universities, by introducing technologies that are future-proof, while inculcating an academic culture that is driven by extensive research to deliver high performance solutions, to retain the highly skilled workforce in Sri Lanka through fully funded PhD scholarships.

This will enable students to invent and deliver a passion of their own, that carries a commercial value, ensures the students of a secure future, that is viable and successful, right here is Sri Lanka.

Through this partnership, CodeGen hopes to expand opportunities designed for postgraduate education in Sri Lanka, with state of the art facilities for students and job-related exposure that are globally in demand. The company is transforming the technological landscape covering multi-industries, to offer intelligent and high-performance solutions that address the needs of tomorrow’s world.
