A seminar cum webinar on the Data Protection Act will be held on 5 July from 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. at Movenpick Hotel, Colombo 3.
With the recent enactment of the Personal Data Protection Act, Sri Lanka joined the international community in balancing the need for the growth of the digital economy and interoperability of data across cross borders, whilst protecting the right to privacy of personal data.
Unauthorised access to and misuse of personal data can give rise to identity theft and other financial crimes. This seminar seeks to advance knowledge of the implications of the new Act and as to how holders and recipients of personal data must take adequate safeguards.
In May 2022, Twitter in the USA was fined $ 150 million for selling users’ data to help targeted advertisements – this serves as a grim reminder that personal data protection requirements must be accorded priority.
