Dialog Axiata PLC, Sri Lanka’s premier connectivity provider, showcased download speeds in excess of 1.4Gbps using a commercial 5G mobile handset, the highest speed that has been achieved via a mobile handset in South East Asia. Mobile 5G services were demonstrated on the 3.6 GHz trial spectrum that the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) allocated for 5G pre-commercial trial. This announcement follows Dialog’s demonstration of a fully standards based 5G mobile service for the first time in South Asia in March 2019, and the first standards based 5G fixed-wireless transmission in December 2018. Dialog today covers more than 90% of the Sri Lankan population with 4G broadband and has been awarded the Ookla Speedtest as the fastest network in the country. Delivery of Gigabit Speeds (>1Gbps) is a demonstration of the capabilities and the future potential of Dialog’s 5G network. Dialog customers can now experience Gigabit download speeds on a commercial smartphone at the Iconic Experience Centre, Sri Lanka’s premier tech flagship store at Union Place in Colombo.
Implementing 5G will mean faster speeds for end consumers, as well as limitless opportunities to automate industrial and home environments. To date Dialog has upgraded over 20% of its expansive base station network to a “5G Ready Status” by deploying Massive MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology.
The same infrastructure will transmit 5G speeds upon the licensing of commercial 5G spectrum in Sri Lanka, enabling the delivery of nationwide 5G coverage.
