The Golden Key Eye and ENT hospital, the first private super-specialty hospital in Sri Lanka, has announced that it will offer two comprehensive eye care packages throughout August to mark the start of its seventh year of operation, which fell on 1 August 2013. The first of these packages is designed for non-diabetics and is priced at a concessionary rate of Rs. 1,800, the hospital said. It includes refraction, colour vision and 3D vision tests, an eye pressure test, slit lamp examination of anterior chamber and fundus by a consultant eye surgeon and a medical report on the findings. The second package comprising all these as well as a retinal photograph for baseline evaluation and recording of current status is designed for diabetics and is priced at a discounted rate of Rs. 2,500. These tests would be useful to check for or change glasses, to ascertain if eye functions are normal, to detect signs of glaucoma, cornea diseases or cataracts and to detect signs of macular degeneration or diabetic eye diseases, the hospital said. Visitors who obtain one of the two packages offered in August can also undergo two hearing tests if they wish – a pure tone audiogram and a tympanogram – for just Rs. 1000, which represents a saving of Rs. 750. More than 26,000 eye surgeries and over 2,800 ENT surgeries have been performed at the Golden Key Hospital from 1 August 2007, the day it opened, to the end of June 2013. The hospital averages more than 45,000 eye consultations and more than 16,000 ENT consultations per year and performs 6,000 plus eye tests and laser procedures per year. In its other area of specialty, the hospital averages over 3,500 ENT procedures and tests per year. A centre of excellence for eye and ENT related investigations, treatment and surgery, the Golden Key Eye and ENT Hospital is the only private facility in Sri Lanka where all eye-related investigations and treatment can be done under one roof. Tests such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) , Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA), Fundus Photography, GDX, A&B scans, as well as treatment such as photocoagulation laser and phaco emulsification surgery for cataracts are done routinely at the hospital. It is also the leading private medical facility in Sri Lanka to offer vitreo-retinal surgery for problems such as retinal detachment and vitreous haemorrhage. The hospital runs several full time specialty clinics for conditions such as glaucoma, squints, vitreoretinal problems, ocular plastics uveitis and paediatric eye diseases, and is the only specialty hospital that is open 24 hours a day. In the area of ENT, the hospital has shown tremendous success with standard ENT surgeries like tympanoplasty, mastoidectomy, tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy as well as advanced head and neck surgery such as thyroidectomy. Its cochlear implant program has helped many young children to hear. State-of-the-art equipment is also available for Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) for nasal polyps and sinusitis. The hospital has five operating theatres located on two floors. Two of them are ultra clean modular theatres, the first of their kind in the private sector. One each is dedicated to the two specialties eye and ENT. Of the other three theatres, two are for general and casualty eye surgery while the third is an emergency ENT theatre. The theatres are equipped with the highest grade Carl Zeiss surgical microscopes and hi-tech surgery recording facilities that enable the surgeons to record their surgeries for future reference. Its fully equipped intensive care unit can handle any patient needing post operative intensive or high dependency care. In addition, 17 single rooms, 23 beds in two or three bed mini ward units and 10 day care beds for patients who come in for single day procedures, make up a total bed strength of 44. The Golden Key Eye and ENT Hospital is managed with the assistance of an advisory committee comprising of Professor Rohan W. Jayasekera, Senior Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Colombo (Chairman), Dr. Saliya Pathirana, Senior Consultant Eye Surgeon, Dr. Saumya Paranawithana, Consultant Eye Surgeon, Dr. Dilruwani Aryasingha, Consultant Eye Surgeon and Niranjan Silva (Chief Operating Officer).
