Browns Hospital Ragama launched its state-of-the-art Kidney Care Centre on 9 February, a significant date in the hospital’s calendar, marking two years of business excellence.
Offering a holistic, total solutions centre, the hospital ventured into this value added service, with the patients’ needs in mind and providing personalised care that best suits the individual needs and also ensuring they lead quality, meaningful and fulfilling lives.
Chronic kidney disease has now become one of the highest non-communicable diseases in Sri Lanka. It is a progressive ailment that ultimately leads to end stage renal disease (ESRD) which requires patients to either receive a kidney transplant or seek dialysis to survive. This has evolved in to a nation-wide epidemic, that the Government too has made it their onus to aid in providing solutions for patients.
Browns Hospitals takes pride in contributing to the nation’s strife in battling this dilemma.
The Kidney Care Centre is well-equipped in offering a complete and patient centric care, with treatment solutions provided by experienced and well-known nephrologists in Sri Lanka.
Facilitated with cutting edge dialysis machines and equipment, facilities for peritoneal diagnosis, patient rooms include every amenity to make the patients’ stay comfortable and are pleasingly architected in keeping with international standards.
The patient care team includes nephrologists, urologists and vascular surgeons well-known in the industry and a well-trained staff ensuring patients are taken care of every step of the way and experienced in offering home dialysis services when necessary in order to promote a flexible, independent lifestyle.
Patients, paediatric to adult, will be privy to personalised care, whereby the patients will be educated on all the treatment options available and as well as conservative care. The Centre will also offer psychological and palliative care suffering with End Stage Kidney Disease, to those who choose not to have renal replacement therapies or undergo a kidney transplant. Pre-emptive transplant options are explored with the patient when appropriate.
Whilst ensuring every service standard is met, Browns Hospital’s main aim is to enable patient care at an affordable and competitive price. The cost being one of the current hindrances to quality treatment, the Hospital intends offer its patients the most affordable treatment options and in turn, set a standard among all healthcare institutions, offering kidney care services.
Plans are underway to extend this service to the soon to be launched Hospital in 2018; the second in the chain of Browns Hospitals secondary care institutions. In addition, to also facilitate independent Kidney Care Centres in Colombo and Suburbs.
“At Browns Hospitals, we understand the need for increased patient access to solutions beyond the regular treatment options. By leveraging on our industry experience and the trust the public have placed on us, we strive to expand patient access to the life-changing benefits of home therapy as well as to flexible in-centre options at the frequency and duration that works best for our patients. Our services are designed to allow patients to take control of their dialysis and to allow physicians the flexibility to prescribe what is truly best for their patients,” stated Dr. Iraivan Thiyagarajah, CEO, Browns Hospitals.
Dr. Anupama, Consultant Nephrologist Colombo South Teaching Hospital, an industry expert aiding in facilitating the Kidney Care Centre, stated: “My life’s passion is providing kidney patients with high quality care. This means counselling the patient, discussing treatment options, and allowing the patient to decide on what works best for them. And also educating patients and their families on the illness and the treatment options available. We will work with the team dedicated to the Kidney Care Centre, to develop the best therapy for each individual patient in terms of modality, frequency and duration. We are committed to expanding access to home therapy and peritoneal dialysis (CTPD) for patients, with the objective of improving clinical outcomes and helping our patients achieve a higher quality of life.”
Browns Hospital Ragama is the first in a chain of secondary care general hospitals and diagnostic centres aimed at delivering high quality care through comprehensive, integrated clinical practice and personalised care, to every patient. The Hospital enables patients living in the area to receive their treatment closer to home, reducing travelling time for treatment and in turn spend more time on their healing and aftercare process.
The Hospital is equipped with the latest medical diagnostic technology, including modern CT and MRI scanning, and advanced medical and surgical therapeutic technology. Furthermore, the introduction of high quality diagnostic centres with deeper geographical penetration and easy access will support early diagnosis of various non-communicable as well as communicable diseases.
