Rotary Club of Colombo West (RCCW) donated five kidney dialysis machines to the Padaviya Base Hospital which is operating satisfactorily with a dedicated team of doctors and nurses. The Hospital currently has eight machines in total and treats 60-70 patients per month. RCCW is committed to support the request of the Padaviya Hospital to expand the existing facility by adding two more dialysis machines and upgrading the RO Plant, so that up to 100 patients could be treated on a monthly basis.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a major burden on the healthcare system of Sri Lanka. Dialysis is an important life saving measure for patients with end stage kidney disease who are awaiting a kidney transplant. The project was initiated when RCCW discovered that many hospitals were unable to address the demand of treatment required for CKD patients. The Club is volunteering to help in this national cause of fighting this alarming kidney disease by facilitating proper healthcare to cure and heal the patients of CKD in the country. Rotary which commenced in 1905, is a worldwide organisation whose membership now exceeds 1.25 million in over 200 countries with the motto of ‘Service above self’, and in Sri Lanka itself, has more than 1,400 Rotarians in 70 Rotary Clubs. The Rotary Club of Colombo West, one of the largest clubs in Sri Lanka, with nearly 100 members is actively involved in community service projects across the country.
