A National Stroke Centre for the multidisciplinary care of stroke patients in Sri Lanka is to be set up at the Colombo East Hospital in Mulleriyawa.
The Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne has recently laid the foundation stone to establish the National Stroke Centre and the Accident and Emergency Care Centre at the Colombo East Hospital in Mulleriyawa.
Expressing his views at the event, Minister Senaratne said non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the main threat to health and accidents are one of the reasons for the NCDs. He added that about 4,000 people die in a year from accidents and many more people are affected.
Speaking of the future measures to improve the health services, Minister Senaratne said accidental services as well as special treatment units will be established in every district.
He said the bone marrow transplants for leukaemia patients have been started at the Maharagama Apeksha Hospital and construction work will begin to set up a bone marrow transplant centre at the Kandy general Hospital for Thalassemia patients.
He said the last year’s budget allocated Rs. 235 billion for health sector and this year also a large sum has been allocated.
The work on the National Stroke Centre is expected to be completed by 2020.
According to the Minister, Colombo East Base Hospital will be developed as a teaching hospital and the university students will get the opportunity to study.
The Minister said the healthcare service is progressing well at present and hospital services should be maintained smoothly.
He urged all the health workers to dedicate themselves to serve the people with their posts.
